Juliane Jones

After a Fulbright Fellowship to study Chinese Music at the Shanghai Conservatory and completing her PhD on Chinese Kunqu opera, in 2014 Juliane founded Ragged Silk, a cross-cultural music collective that performs on stages around the world and has created original music for some of today’s most iconic brands. Recent activities include recordings for the Met Gala 2015, original score for Yin Yue’s Dance at BalletX 2016 Winter Series, and performances at Joe’s Pub NYC, the Mercedes-Benz Auto Show in Xi’an, China, and at Sync Summits in Los Angeles, New York, and London.

Ragged Silk’s debut Visual Album is a collaboration between Juliane Jones and Ba Ban Chinese Music Society of New York. The Visual Album integrates traditional Chinese music genres of guqin, pipa and xiao music, Chinese opera, and Buddhist chant into Western popular music idioms. It pushes the boundaries of performance by blending languages, timbres, and concepts in a way that is conscious of the stakes of translation and appropriation. The album was tracked in Ragged Silk Studios in NYC and Doug Beiden studios in Nashville. The motion graphics were designed by Hui Chi Huang and directed by Rickie Ashman.
